Women are rather fickle and often give out the wrong signals which often are based on assumption. When it comes to the first date, this is pretty typical. If you don't fancy the guy and are not looking forward to a second date, it becomes quite straight-forward. However, if you fancy another outing with the guy, it is important to send out the right messages.
It really doesn't matter whether you are out for dinner, at the park or watching a movie, if you enjoyed yourself, try not to go overboard with wanting to get him to ask you out again. That might have the opposite effect. All you really need to do is tell him you had a great time and that you enjoyed his company.
The most counter productive thing you could do is ending the date without throwing subtle but definitive hints that you are available for another date. If you choose to say nothing and expecting him to join the dots, he may just be left believing that you are not keen to go on another date with him. Chances are, it will leave him confused and to avoid a dent to his self-confidence, he might chose not to follow up with you.
My favourite and fool-proof words are telling him to 'give me a call if you want to do this again. He will get the message. Life is really too short to play hard to get. Besides, it rarely works.
